Carolyn Esswein, PDI Principal, has over 15 years of experience in urban design and planning. She has worked on numerous projects providing expertise in architectural and urban design, growth management, rural planning, design guidelines, and community development. Her work in comprehensive planning has won state and regional wards.

Ms. Esswein’s work involves neighborhood and comprehensive planning projects in communities throughout Wisconsin. Her work includes the award–winning Fond du Lac and North Neighborhood Comprehensive Plan for the City of Milwaukee. The Plan promotes investment and provides guidance for public and private development initiatives. She has played a leading role in the Village of Fontana’s Downtown Redevelopment Plan which includes a new village center, lakefront redevelopment and the redesign of a major highway. Ms. Esswein also worked on a Comprehensive Plan update and a neighborhood regulation plan for the City of Franklin as well as comprehensive plan updates for the Town of West Bend and Town of Lyons.

Ms. Esswein has made major contributions to many redevelopment projects in Milwaukee. The Midtown Triangle commercial redevelopment, as well as the Lindsay Heights and City Homes residential redevelopments are among the successfully implemented projects she has completed.

Ms. Esswein has drafted several design and development guidelines for municipal clients in southeastern Wisconsin. She developed guidelines for the Commercial Center Development plan in New Berlin, as well as the Village Center Plan for Pleasant Prairie which included architectural regulations, streetscaping, and overall development concepts.

Ms. Esswein has also developed ordinances and guidelines for land conservation and design review for Wisconsin municipalities.

Ms. Esswein earned dual Masters degrees in Architecture and Urban Planning from the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee (UWM) and an undergraduate degree from the University of Wisconsin–Madison. She also studied at Oxford Polytechnic in England and Ecole Special D'Architecture in France. In addition to her work at PDI, Ms. Esswein is an adjunct professor at the School of Architecture and Urban Planning at UWM.

Ms Esswein is a member of the American Institute of Certified Planners and the American Planning Association(APA). She serves as a board member of the Wisconsin Chapter of the APA and is a member of the Wauwatosa Board of Zoning Appeals.

In addition to her role at PDI, Ms Esswein is an Outreach Specialist for the School of Architecture and Urban Planning at UWM. Ms. Esswein has made several presentations to planning and citizen groups on the use of neo–traditional planning techniques, and on maintaining community character through land preservation, neighborhood design, and performance standards.
