City of Milwaukee and the Neighborhood Renewal Foundation Project The master plan for this area applies traditional neighborhood development concepts and includes an economic development strategy. Discontinued Highway Project The 60–block project area is located in an area of the City that was once planned to be razed for a highway project in the 1960s. It is predominately residential, with adjacent commercial, industrial, and institutional uses. In anticipation of the highway construction, the City began acquiring property in the area. When the roadway plans were discontinued, the City needed a plan to help redevelop the neighborhood. Return to Traditional Neighborhoods The plan details development opportunities throughout the area to create a mixed–use neighborhood with a variety of built and natural amenities. Since implementation of the plan, the neighborhood has new shared green spaces and homes with porches and other new urbanist features. Economic Development Strategy As recommended in the plan, the area now combines a variety of housing types and neighborhood commercial services. These mixed–use opportunities helped enhance the tax base and increase the property value in the neighborhood. As part of the economic strategy, PDI identified proposed land uses and physical development options, as well as a sequence for development. Infrastructure modifications and improvements were recommended to help coordinate public and private activities to promote development. |
