City of Milwaukee, WI Project PDI prepared a Neighborhood Plan for a racially and economically diverse area in the heart of Milwaukee. Implementation and Revitalization The plan is part of the larger city-wide Comprehensive Plan, and is currently being used to guide implementation of eight catalytic projects designed to promote investment opportunities. New developments, including the area’s first new urbanist housing, are helping to revitalize the area. Complex Patterns and Uses The 1,000–acre neighborhood includes residential property, a farmers market, and a commercial and industrial corridor along a railroad. The area’s boundaries are formed by an interstate freeway and major city arterials. In addition, the area became fragmented when parts of the neighborhood were razed in the 1960s for a highway project that was not completed. Community Vision and Goals Based on extensive community participation, the plan was developed to reflect concerns for affordable housing, better transportation, additional gathering spaces, and economic stability. Community input was gathered from residents, City officials, the North Avenue Community Development Corporation, the 30th Street Industrial Corridor Corporation, and the Neighborhood Improvement Development Corporation. PDI collected information through: •Stakeholder interviews •Household surveys •Image preference survey •Focus groups and open houses •Multiple charrettes/workshops Awards The plan received awards from the Midwest Regional Planning Association, as well as the Wisconsin Chapter of the American Planning Association. |
